A useful blog on Fosters.com highlighted some interesting points about choosing kid-proof and kid-friendly furniture without having to compromise on style.
According to a spokesperson from Pottery Barn quoted in the blog, Kendra Stewart, the key to child-proof furniture is customizable furniture. This will allow you to choose a stylish design but combine it with durable fabrics and materials.
Whenever kids are around, bear in mind your space should be comfortable. It should also handle playful activity. For instance, try using an abrasion-resistant and water-repellant sofa for your living room space. Also, rather than using a sharp-cornered and fragile coffee table, purchase a big ottoman with a large tray for your drinks and food.
Soft flat-weave rugs are another essential for homes with young children. Not only do they add colour and texture, but they also preserve your floors and provide a cosy playing surface.
For his part, furniture manufacturer Slobproof! managing director Sam Weinberger recommends 100 percent maple hardwood for furniture frames because of their durability and long lifespan. On the other hand, polyester fabrics outlast suedes and other softer material.
Darker fabrics get the nod over neutral-coloured fabrics because the former aren’t as high-maintenance. Plus, they can also hide stains and other messes.
If you have kids, a storage ottoman is imperative because of its dual functionality: it can accommodate bulky items and also act as a footrest or seat.
