People across Western Australian, whether on holiday or residents are being advised by the Department of Health to be vigilant against mosquitoes. This is the peak period for mosquito borne diseases and people are being urged to protect themselves.

The Department of Health’s virus surveillance program found insects were carrying Ross River virus and Barmah Forest virus.

Experts warned these viruses are most active in the south-west of WA in the late spring and summer.

Both viruses led to symptoms including painful, swollen joints, skin rashes, fever, fatigue and headaches.These can last weeks or months.

Avoid being outdoors during dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active and have your home protected by insect screens. Read more at
